Bandile’s story
... a changed life
Bandile, a middle-aged man, has been coming to the Ikhwezi Support Group for counselling ever since he was diagnosed HIV-positive in 2003. It was in 2004 that he started to get sick with pneumonia and his health deteriorated to the point where he could not walk, see or eat. He couldn’t do anything for himself.
Bandile was in and out of hospital and eventually his doctor spoke to Nomvelo, a volunteer at Ikhwezi, to say that he didn’t think Bandile would live for more than a week. Not knowing what to do Nomvelo asked members of the support group and staff to pray for the doctor and Bandile’s health. A month or so later, Bandile was out of hospital. His recovery was slow and he had to learn how to walk again. He also decided to give up drinking.
Bandile joined a prayer group and made a promise that as soon as he recovered fully he would serve God. A few months later he was back at church and he eventually went back to work.
Bandile is now doing great work in the community and his local church. He teaches his work colleagues about HIV and AIDS and sets a good example by openly sharing information about his status and experiences – even addressing more than 100 people in a community hall!
God is definitely at work at Ikhwezi and they thank God for Bandile’s life and many answered prayers.
(Bandile is not his real name)
