accountability in action

The Bread for Children Kenya micro-enterprise scheme is for guardians of orphans and vulnerable children. Each scheme member is part of a group of five. The group starts by saving for four weeks to show their commitment and then the whole group qualifies for a loan. Three members receive the loan first and then the other two members later. Everyone in the group has to pay back their loan before a larger loan is allowed. This method creates mutual accountability amongst the group and repayment rates are relatively high. A Field Officer also visits the scheme members regularly to support and encourage them.

Members receive training in business planning, profit and loss and bookkeeping, as well as in HIV and AIDS and how to look after the physical and psychological needs of the children in their care.
