There is an ongoing debate about the best way to look after children without stigmatising those orphaned as a result of HIV/AIDS. There is also a desire to acknowledge that factors other than HIV can make children vulnerable. Valerie Dietrich has been involved in training three iThemba partners in community-based responses to orphans and vulnerable children.

HIV/AIDS – 25 years on

It is 25 years since the first cases of AIDS were recognised. Who could have predicted the devastation this disease would have on communities around the world. In that time, more than 65 million people have been infected with HIV and 25 million have died.

Is it just about the provision of ARVs?

The 16th International AIDS Conference took place in Toronto. The theme for this conference was ‘Time to Deliver’. History will be the judge of its impact. But, at the very least, the needs of the poor who are HIV-infected had a voice. Three of the world’s most prominent AIDS activists – Bill and Melinda Gates as well as ex-president Bill Clinton – spoke passionately about the need for the world to act, and to act now.
