Community Care Project
Pietermaritzburg, South Africa
Community Care Project (CCP) has been working in the field of HIV and AIDS since 2000. A core team is based in central Pietermaritzburg, but much of the work is done through community members in and around Pietermaritzburg and Impendle. These volunteers are trained to be able to support, care for and equip their own families and neighbours. The project has provided direct assistance to over 1,000 people living with HIV, trained over 700 home-based care givers and helped 23 local churches to establish home-based care initiatives.
CCP works closely with Newfrontier Aid Trust (NAT), which also partners with iThemba. Over the next three years, iThemba's support will enable CCP to train volunteers from 30 local churches to assist and support those affected by HIV and AIDS in their communities. They will work with NAT to ensure that sustainable programmes are developed in these churches.
Over this three-year period, it is hoped that a total of 1,000 orphans and vulnerable children and 400 people living with HIV will be helped. Foster parents will be trained, helped with grant applications and encouraged to start income-generating activities to help support their families.
