Izandla Zethemba

Cape Town, South Africa

Izandla Zethemba started life as an outreach project run by Khanyisa Community Church. It has developed into a locally-registered not-for-profit organisation, overseen by the church and located in the church premises.

Khanyisa Community Church is part of the Newfrontiers network of churches, a network that came out of the house-church movement in the UK in the 1970s. Despite it’s location in the heart of the township, the congregation is racially mixed and Izandla Zethemba is able to draw on a wide range of skills and expertise.

Thobeka Macozoma is the Project Manager and she oversees a team of five trained volunteers. Five support groups are run each week – two for adults affected by HIV and AIDS and three for orphans and vulnerable children. Families are visited regularly in their homes, providing an opportunity for unmet needs to be identified and for more personal counselling to take place.

A church in central Cape Town supplies food parcels on a monthly basis for distribution to particularly needy families in the area. Every three months Izandla, in partnership with the church, run HIV-awareness campaigns in the local community.
